Shoreham Haven Hospital

"Demolished during coastal storm โ€” wards collapsed, roof torn free. Records purged, mapping suppressed. Archive status: redacted, denied. Urban legend status confirmed โ€” never existed. DO NOT INVESTIGATE FURTHER."

Overview

Shoreham Haven Hospital was a facility in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. On the night of 15โ€“16 October 1987, it was destroyed โ€” officially, by the Great Storm that battered the south of England that night; actually, by a Class-A Kinetic/Thermal Discharge originating in Beowulf field agent Benjamin Knight following the death of his sister on the ward. 683 people were confirmed dead. 19 were missing presumed dead. The building was rendered uninhabitable. All records, artefacts, and remaining occupants were destroyed. Three people survived.

The site was subsequently cleared, records purged, mapping suppressed. Residents' accounts were disregarded. Photographs disappeared. The documentation was voided. The missing building was replaced with the quiet lawn of a retirement home, as though the hospital had been a dream someone chose not to recall. Its Beowulf archive status is: redacted, denied, urban legend status confirmed. Never existed. Do not investigate further.

It is where Robert Knight was born. He has never been able to find a record of it.

The Night of 15โ€“16 October 1987

The Beowulf incident review for the events of that night is designated SECT 9 and classified at the highest level. What remains visible in the recovered fragments describes the following sequence. Christine Knight was admitted to Ward 4 in labour. The attending phenomenon was classified as a Class-A Kinetic/Thermal Discharge of Gold Spectrum. The outcome of the separation of host and event was failure โ€” Christine's body could not contain the surge; critical biological failure; energy signature transferred to offspring. The entity Agrat bat Mahlat was confirmed present and destroyed on-site by Dorothy Knight via suicide-working. Beowulf operatives โ€” 54 โ€” and Orion operatives โ€” 31 โ€” were killed alongside the civilian patients and staff who comprised the remainder of the 683 dead.

The cause of facility loss is recorded precisely: uncontrolled Class-A Kinetic/Thermal Discharge originating in Field Agent Knight, Benjamin. Emotional trigger: bereavement and rage cascade following host failure. Ben could not reach his mother. He brought the building down instead. Toby got the child out. The note appended to the incident review regarding Ben's survival describes it as anomalous.

The offspring survived. One line of the document, double underlined: OFFSPRING BELIEVED TO BE DEMON/ANGEL HYBRID. FIRST IN 1,500 YEARS โ€” POTENTIALLY UNSTABLE โ€” MANIFESTATION PREDICTION: AGE SEVEN.

The Cover Story

The Great Storm of 15โ€“16 October 1987 is one of the most documented meteorological events in British history. The Met Office failed to forecast it. Eighteen people died; fifteen million trees were felled overnight. It is the perfect cover โ€” a real catastrophe of sufficient scale to absorb the loss of a hospital without requiring explanation, in a country still processing the shock of what had happened to it overnight.

The newspaper headline reads: Shoreham Haven Hospital Ravaged by Storm: Dozens Missing as Winds Tear Through Coast. Questions Remain as Records Disappear. The second line, printed beneath the first, is the tell โ€” questions do not remain about storm damage. Records do not disappear from storm damage. The headline was written by someone who understood what they were covering and chose the smallest words available.

When Robert searches for the hospital online in 2001, he finds its history scattered across different names โ€” Shoreham General in one record, St Bernard's in another. His folder contains a name that belongs nowhere. The missing building has been replaced by a retirement home. The lawn is quiet. The records end.

The Three Survivors

The Beowulf document pinned to the wall of Declan's operation lists three survivors beneath the archive note. They are not named in the visible portion of the document. From the wider text of the saga they can be identified as: Benjamin Knight, Tobias Knight, and the infant Robert Knight. Ben's survival is noted in the incident review as anomalous, given that the discharge originated with him. No explanation is offered for how he survived what he caused.

Trivia

  • The hospital appears under at least three different names in the records Robert finds: Shoreham Haven, Shoreham General, and St Bernard's. Whether these represent deliberate obfuscation, genuine archival inconsistency, or Beowulf's active management of the records is not clarified in Book One. The effect is the same: a building that cannot be located, verified, or mourned.
  • The Beowulf designation for the site โ€” KNIGHT -- ECTR 7 -- VESSEL_CLASS_A (INCUBATOR) โ€” classifies the hospital not by its function as a medical facility but by its role in the crossing event. It is, in the organisation's taxonomy, the location of a containment failure and a birth. The two things are the same entry.
  • Ben's survival of the discharge he himself produced is noted in the incident review as anomalous without further comment. The implication โ€” that his cambion nature protected him from his own destructive capacity โ€” is not explored in the document. It is left for the reader to consider.
  • The query Shoreham Haven triggers an active response โ€” QUERY LOGGED. IP TRACED. DO NOT PROCEED. โ€” rather than simply returning no results. This is not a dead database. Something is still monitoring searches for this hospital fourteen years after it was supposedly destroyed by a storm.
